SNMP Research Announces Support for FIPS 140-2

Knoxville, TN, May 30, 2012 - SNMP Research International, Inc. is pleased to announce the availability of solutions supporting FIPS 140-2. When product specifications for internet management require compliance with the FIPS 140-2 encryption standards, project engineers can look to the FIPS 140-2 Enhanced EMANATE Agent for success. SNMP Research's SNMP manager and agent products now offer access to FIPS 140-2 validated cryptographic libraries as an option.

The FIPS 140-2 Enhanced EMANATE Agent embeds a FIPS 140-2 validated OpenSSL cryptographic module into EMANATE's code. The validated OpenSSL FIPS 140-2 module provides the cryptographic services in the EMANATE Agent by replacing the standard cryptographic code available in EMANATE or EMANATE/Lite.

And addressing the other end of the cryptographic communications, the FIPS 140-2 Enhanced BRASS management development kit utilizes the same validated OpenSSL cryptographic libraries when creating management applications. Then the communication between manager and agent is completely secured by FIPS 140-2 compliant libraries.

The user may select either the standard cryptographic services for his network, or he may choose the FIPS option for his network. If he chooses FIPS, then another option becomes available. That is, if there is a requirement to use the FIPS services, AES and SHA-1, with some networked nodes, while using non-FIPS compliant DES or MD5 with other networked nodes, then this configuration can be used. When using FIPS 140-2 standards, MD5 and DES are considered non-secure. MD5 and DES are widely available within SNMPv3 compliant agents.

Using the FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptographic libraries does not add discernible performance differences or reduce access to other features available within either the agent or manager. MIB documents compiled using the EMANATE Subagent Development Kit will work with the FIPS 140-2 Enhanced EMANATE Agent. Management applications previously compiled with the BRASS Management Applications development kit will work, too.

Both the FIPS 140-2 Enhanced EMANATE Agent and the 140-2 Enhanced BRASS Management Development Kit are available in either source or binary form as a set of development tools for the project engineer. Contact SNMP Research by phone at +1 865 579 3311 or email sales@snmp.com.
