Knoxville, TN, August 12, 2020—SNMP Research is pleased to announce General Availability of SHA‑2 in all SNMP Research products on all platforms where it can be supported.
The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) deprecated SHA-1 in 2011 and disallowed its use for digital signatures at the end of 2013. In 2017, Google demonstrated a successful attack on the SHA-1 hash algorithm by creating two files that hash to the same value. While NIST has not addressed the use of SHA-1 for SNMP authentication, we encourage our customers to migrate to SHA‑2.
SNMP Research recommends the use of SNMPv3 and SHA‑2 for all SNMP communications. This requires that both the SNMP manager and SNMP agent support SNMPv3 with SHA‑2.
